RECORDING ACADEMY TO FIGHT FOR MUSIC CREATORS' RIGHTS

Singer-songwriter and actor Jason Mraz first came to prominence in the San Diego coffee shop scene in 2000. In 2002 he released his debut studio album, Waiting for My Rocket to Come, which contained the hit single "The Remedy (I Won't Worry)".
Nearly one year after the successful passage of the transformative Music Modernization Act, the Recording Academy will unite music creators and members of Congress in their hometowns to continue the momentum for music creator protections as a part of the Academy's 6th annual District Advocate Day. Taking place on October 2, 2019, members of the music community can register now to take part in the largest advocacy day for music creators and have their voices heard.

Two-time Grammy-winner Jason Mraz is the first-ever District Advocate Ambassador and will encourage and inspire other Recording Academy members and music supporters to join him in this nationwide rally.

Approximately 2,000 Academy members—all professional music creators—will sit down with their member of Congress in hundreds of districts across the country to showcase how music is a vital component of the local economy and needs protection.

In addition to Recording Academy members meeting one-on-one with congressional representatives, fans and other members of the music community are encouraged to sign up and participate in District Advocate Day online, as a day of unity in support of music and those who create it.

Some of the key issues music creators will discuss with congressional representatives include:

Encouraging passage of the CASE Act, which enables independent artists and songwriters to protect their work against infringement through the creation of a small claims copyright court
Establishing a performance right on terrestrial radio, the only business in the United States that uses another person's intellectual property without permission or compensation
Encouraging the Department of Justice to ensure fair compensation for songwriters during its review of the consent decrees that regulate how songwriters are paid
Protecting arts funding and music education to invest in the next generation of music creators

District Advocate Day, along with the Recording Academy's annual Grammys on the Hill in April, are the Recording Academy's tentpole advocacy events, and are credited with helping to pass the Music Modernization Act into law—the largest update to music legislation in the past 40 years.

ART AND ABOUT

MICK JAGGER
the Rolling Stones frontman went shopping at the Menil Bookstore after touring the famed museum. According to the museum, a day after the Stones concert at the NRG Stadium in July, Jagger and Ronnie Wood stopped by the Menil Collection. Menil director Rebecca Rabinow heard them knocking and gave the pair a private tour in the afternoon. “Highlights of the Rolling Stones’ tour included The Menil’s African art galleries and the museum’s iconic Surrealism rooms,” according to Menil officials. Like all tourists they left through the gift/bookstore.

Jagger purchased three of Houston artist Kathleen Packlick’s collage kits which each contains 20-30 pieces and sell for $20-$25.

The Menil Collection opened in 1987 to preserve and exhibit the art collection of John and Dominique de Menil. Considered one of the most important privately assembled collections of the twentieth century, The Menil Collection houses approximately 17000 paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, photographs, and rare books. Masterpieces from antiquity, the Byzantine and medieval worlds the tribal cultures of Africa, Oceania, the American Pacific Northwest, and the twentieth century are particularly well represented. Among the highlights of the museum are its Surrealist holdings, widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost collections of its kind.

ED HARDY DEEPER THAN SKIN
Ed Hardy self portrait
the first museum retrospective of renowned tattoo artist and California native Ed Hardy tracks his goal of elevating the tattoo from its subculture status to an important visual art form. After art school, Ed Hardy deviated from the path to professorship and became one of the most influential tattoo artists of the 20th century. His iconic style emerged from his childhood fascination with classic American tattooing, study of prints by artists like Rembrandt and Goya, and deep influence from Japan’s ukiyo-e era culture.

Survey his life in art through an eclectic display of paintings, sketches, interactive digital displays, and much more. With over 350 objects on display, Ed Hardy: Deeper than Skin is on view now through October 6 at the de Young museum in San Francisco.

Deeper than Skin features paintings, drawings, prints and three-dimensional works by Hardy in a retrospective format that begins with a selection of drawings from the 1950s, when the young artist became fixated on the art of tattooing. Photographs and sketched tattoo designs by the ten-year-old Hardy are on view, all of them taken at or inspired by the tattoo parlors of the Long Beach Pike, an amusement zone not far from his Corona del Mar home. When Hardy was a teenager, his interest turned from tattooing to creating imagery inspired by the Southern California hot-rod, custom-car, and surf cultures. In high school, an influential teacher directed him to investigate contemporary art and literature, including Pop Art and Beat poetry. Hardy made trips to visit Los Angeles galleries, including the now-legendary Ferus Gallery, where he saw the work of Andy Warhol, Bruce Conner, John Altoon.

Hardy graduated from SFAI in 1967 with a degree in printmaking and turned down a graduate fellowship offer from Yale University and decided instead to begin tattooing professionally. In keeping with the times, he explains that he considered fine art as elitist, and tattooing as a “forgotten American folk art” with potential for a revival. Hardy’s goal was to expand the expressive potential of the medium and introduce it to audiences beyond its marginalized status and insular subculture.

SONGS OF HOME discover the little-known story of music in NSW during the first 70 years of the colony in our newly launched exhibition. Songs of Home features more than 80 objects including an opera costume worn by Joan Sutherland; Discover a guitar once owned by Napoleon.

Discover the story of the Murray family and their musical possessions, hauled by horse-drawn carriage over the Blue Mountains. On display for the first time in Australia are albums of music hand-copied by Jane Austen, revealing her musical tastes and practices, similar to those brought to Australia by immigrants in the late 18th and 19th centuries.

Experience a diverse array of music, old and new, through performances by leading Australian and British musicians, as well as students at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. A series of specially commissioned contemporary works by Aboriginal composers, in partnership with the Ngarra-Burria First Peoples Composers initiative with support from the Royal Australian Navy Band, highlight the powerful and continuing presence of Aboriginal music making.

SPREADING THE WORD

WOOLLY MAMMOTH'S LOVE DRIVE officially kicks off on August 21 an initiative, led locally by Woolly Mammoth in Washington, DC and Lil Soso Productions - inspired by Woolly Mammoth's presentation of What to Send Up When It Goes Down, a play-pageant-ritual-homegoing celebration in response to the physical and spiritual deaths of Black people.

"The idea is simple," explained Woolly Mammoth. " We’re inviting people from all walks of life to write a love letter to Black people living in this anti-Black society."

While Broadway To Vegas finds the terminology "writing a love letter" a little creepy as opposed to writing a letter of hope, inspiration or apology, the intent of the project is sincere.

The venue continued: The collected love letters will become part of the set for What to Send Up When It Goes Down! Letters will then travel with the piece as it tours to Boston and New York where the Love Drive will continue. Our goal is to collect 1000 love letters. A little love goes a long way, and we hope that you will consider writing a letter to join this collective effort to bring healing through the arts.

THE OREGON SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL in Ashland, Oregon announced six new commissions as part of American Revolutions: the United States History Cycle, OSF’s multi-decade program of commissioning and developing 37 new plays about moments of change in United States history. The commissioned artists are Zakiyyah Alexander, Jaclyn Backhaus, E. M. Lewis, Mary Katheryn Nagle, Sara Novic, and Sanaz Toossi.

American Revolutions brings together artists and theatres from around the country to establish a shared understanding of our nation’s past while illuminating the best paths for our nation's future. Two American Revolutions plays are now on OSF stages and run play through October: Between Two Knees by the 1491s (a co-commission with New Native Theatre) and the Tony-winning Indecent by Paula Vogel (a co-commission with Yale Repertory Theatre). OSF’s 2020 season will also include two world-premiere American Revolutions plays: The Confederates by Dominique Morisseau (a co-commission with Penumbra Theatre) and The Copper Children by Karen Zacarías.

SHAKESPEARE AND HATHAWAY PRIVATE INVESTIGATORS is a gem of a British comedic drama mystery television series set in Stratford-upon-Avon, produced by BBC Birmingham, aired in American on PBS. The cozy series is clever, extremely well written, brilliantly acted by Jo Joyner as Luella Shakespeare, Mark Benton as Frank Hathaway and Patrick Walshe McBride as their flamboyant assistant Sebastian Brudenell. Directed by incorporating some seldom used camera angles which highlights the quirkiness. Every aspect of this series is enjoyable.

SHIRLEY MacLAINE is mourning the passing of one of her beloved dogs, Trixie. The actress, who is currently in Los Angeles looking over new projects, posted: "This past month my darling Trixie passed. It was sudden, unexpected and caused by an enlarged heart, which was truly Trixie – all heart. She was my bedmate, always snuggling while Buddy watched over us. She was a special little fur person that helped ease the pain of Terry’s passing and I know the two of them are playing and exploring on another realm. Buddy is now by my side at all times. He’s my support and constant source of amusement. It’s obvious he misses her but I think he’s enjoying being the only fur-child at the moment."
